Ron has been in the transport industry for over 40 years and during this time has seen the good times and the tough times.
During this time Ron’s greatest legacy would have to be the founding of the “Australian Truck Drivers’ Memorial” at Tarcutta NSW. This memorial was the brainchild of Ron, who even dug the initial foundations himself and laboured with the building of the 1st brick wall. This was in 1993 and now the memorial has become national with sadly more than 1000 names inscribed there.
The memorial is now placed on “Historical Sites and Properties” by the NSW Govt. Ron has not only inspired the idea but also has organised the event year after year since its inception. Ron has put many hundreds of hours into the running of this event each year , Just ask some of the many thousands that have attended over the years. He was inducted into the Hall of fame at Aloce Springs in 2003 for his commitment to the Memorial. Ron has been through a tough past 3-4 years after an accidental fall where he acquired a brain injury and had to step down as chairman of the ATDM. Although he still remains on the committee and is now the honourable Patron of Memorial project.
When he heard of the concept of the Trans-Help Foundation, he was keen and eager to assist in trying to turn the concept into a reality. Having first hand knowledge and experience of the industry he too could see the vision and difference the Foundation would make for many drivers and their families.
Some of his other achievements during this time are:
- Associated with Transport since 1965, Owner driver 1965 – 1977
- Purchased a share in Block Transport Townsville 1978- 1984
- Contracted to Besser Blocks for block cartage and sand cartage with Semi –Tippers.
- Purchased a run down “Truck Stop” at South Gundagai , Registered as “Trucker Box” Gundagai
- Operated this Truck Stop from 1984- 1990 with his family. This business was highly successful until Shell Oil Co bought it from Ron sometime around 1989-90.
- Started work with Re-Car Truck repairs 1990, Re-Car had only one heavy haulage towing unit at that time. Ron took over the running of the towing operation and soon increased the number of heavy equipment vehicles to a fleet of seven, with the flagship of the fleet being a T-950 specially built to Rons Specs with underlift and special purpose lifting equipment to satisfy the industry, the Police and the RTA with only the interest in all facets of safety in mind i.e. Truck Accidents involved with “Dangerous Goods” etc.
- Ron applied for and won Major Police contracts all over NSW.
- Ron applied for and won Major contracts for the Sydney Olympic Games 2000, where he placed 3 trucks, 1. Olympic Stadium, 2. Sydney Airport, 3. Darling Harbour, 3 back up cars and 6 staff. This was a co-ordinated plan by Ron to ensure Sydney's roads were cleared quickly and efficiently of any accident or breakdown involving heavy T/port during the games. This was a paramount the NSW Govt placed on Ron who was solely responsible for this task. The mission was so successful, the NSW Govt called Rons crew back to do the Paralympics.
- Ron took the role of introducing “Quality Assurance” for his staff and the fleet of heavy tow units he managed.
- Ron was proud to say his fleet was the only “Quality Assured Towing Fleet” that had been endorsed at that time.
