Many transport drivers do have high blood pressure (B/P), but are unaware of their condition.
Our Health & Support Unit now has clear evidence that energy drinks will increase your B/P and if you have hypertension and don't know it, one energy drink can escalate your blood pressure to a level of a stroke or even a heart attack..
A perfect B/P reading is 120/80, but of course this can vary slightly either way.
One driver was checked when visiting the Health & Support Unit and his B/P was 198/110, he admitted to drinking an energy drink prior to the test. He was checked the following night and it had dropped to 172/98. He has now been to his G.P and is now on medication.
In October 2008 seven drivers who visited the health unit had very concerning blood pressure, all were asked the question as to whether they had consumed any energy drinks? Each admitted that they had. They were asked to return the following night and not to consume any energy drinks. We were astounded that one returned the following evening and every one had reduced B/P reading.
The reality is that someone with hypertension who consumes energy drinks and their blood pressure escalates causing a stroke or heart attack behind the wheel has not only the potential of killing themselves, but also other innocent road users.
Note: On average approximately 72% of those that have attended the Health & Support Unit have some medical issue, including, but not limited to hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol, sleep apnea, depression, skin cancers, prostate problems etc.
