Since our inception over two years ago, we have assisted many families following the death of loved ones. Some of these tragic deaths have been a result of heart attacks behind the wheel.

It was the realisation that many drivers have trouble getting an appointment with their GP, especially with the schedules of a transport driver. With this in mind we needed to find away that we could work toward addressing this concern and bring benefit not only to the drivers, but also the safety of all road users.

The Trans-Help Health & Support Unit was launched in August 2008. This unit was donated by Iveco and Cummins suppied the funding for the internal fitout and medical equiptment. Beyondblue provided the funding for the computer and audio equipment and have since partnered us in producing brochures specifically designed for the transport industry.

The Unit provides a free preliminary health checks, incuding blood pressure and regular vitals, glucose, cholesterol, tryglyserites, weight, height etc. The unit also has an array of health information highlighting health and mental illness. The test are carried out by volunteer Registered Nurses and also has a counsellor available.

The Unit now operational and over the next two years will be touring Australia, targeting major transport corridors, where accident rate is high,  providing free health checks and offering support to transport personnel.

A driver’s health and wellbeing is paramount, therefore Trans-Help has expanded its support of the industry’s drivers by setting up a mobile Health and Support Unit. This has been possible with the aid of donations from various organizations, which also feel passionate about supporting our overworked and overlooked truck drivers.

Already drivers have been utilising the service and the Foundation has has some positive results. Drivers are advising that they have followed our advise and are now on medication. GPs have been in touch congratulating us on the inititive.
